APR is not always the same as the stated interest rate
Annual percentage rate is intended to express borrowing cost on a yearly basis, but the way it is calculated depends on the product and jurisdiction. A loan’s stated interest rate commonly measures interest on principal, while APR can also reflect specified lender charges. As a result, two loans with the same nominal interest rate may have different APRs when their finance charges differ.
Use matching payment timing and periods when comparing alternatives. An annual nominal rate divided by twelve is a periodic rate for a conventional monthly-payment calculation; it is not automatically the same as a regulated disclosed APR or the effective annual yield. Fees paid upfront and fees financed into principal also have different effects on cash received and repayment amounts.
Before deciding, compare the disclosed finance charge, amount financed, number of payments, term, prepayment terms, and total repayment. A generic estimate may not reproduce every legal disclosure rule, especially for variable-rate loans or products with irregular payments. Refer to your lender’s current loan disclosure for the governing APR.
