Dataset Size & Storage Estimator
Estimate dataset storage and memory before processing
Dataset size depends on the number of records, the number and type of fields, and the representation used on disk or in memory. A numeric column stored as 64-bit values needs eight bytes per element before indexing structures, null markers, metadata, compression, or format overhead. One million such values therefore occupy roughly eight million bytes for the raw data alone, which is not the same as the size of a complete file or DataFrame.
Text fields are more variable because character encoding and string length affect storage. UTF-8 text can use more than one byte for some characters, and columnar formats can compress repeated values in ways that plain CSV does not. A dataset can also grow substantially when loaded into an application that creates temporary arrays, indexes, copies, or encoded versions for model training.
Use the output as an initial capacity estimate and validate it against a representative sample saved in the actual format you plan to use. For a training workflow, allow additional memory for batching, feature transformations, optimizer state, and parallel workers; disk size alone does not define the resources needed to process the data.
