How to estimate brick quantities without understating waste
Brick quantities begin with the net face area of each wall, not simply the building footprint. Multiply the length of each wall by its height, then deduct windows, doors, and other openings. A brick count based on wall area also needs the brick face dimensions and the mortar joint thickness, because wider joints change the number of brick courses across a fixed area. A double-skin wall uses more bricks than a single-skin wall; do not assume the same wall-area rate applies to both.
For a worked planning example, a 5 m long and 2.4 m high wall has a gross face area of 12 m². If it includes a 1.2 m by 1.5 m opening, the net area becomes 10.2 m² before allowances. Multiply that net area by the chosen bricks-per-square-metre rate to obtain a base quantity, and then add a clearly stated percentage for cuts and breakage. Actual waste depends on bonds, corners, brick sizes, delivery damage, and the number of small openings.
Mortar volume, bricks, labour, and delivery should be estimated separately. Standard brick dimensions and nominal mortar joints vary by region, so confirm the chosen settings against supplier specifications and the wall design. Structural walls, reinforcement, lintels, and local building rules need project-specific verification; this calculator is a material-planning aid rather than an engineering approval.
